The kitchen smells like ham and various other foods. There are presents laying under the tree. Can you guess what holiday I am thinking of? Well, of course I am talking about Christmas. Christmas is my favorite holiday. I have such great memories at this time of the year. The snow is falling, the heat is blasting making the house all toasty and I am surrounded by the ones I love the most. Some people think that Christmas is all about presents and gifts, but that is not the true reality about Christmas. Christmas is actually about the time you spend with your loved ones. There is nothing like sitting on the couch after a big meal talking with the ones you care the most about. That is what I love about Christmas. Usually there is not a time when everybody in my family can get together, but everybody makes an effort for Christmas. I remember when I was little and all my cousins used to travel hours to spend the Christmas holiday with family. Of course, now that everybody has gotten older it has gotten harder to all meet us, but nevertheless, we still think about each other all the time.

What is the most precious item in your life? The one thing that you cannot do without. The thing in life you value the most. This question does leave some room for interpretation. There is no wrong interpretation. Please answer with what pops into your head first. Please do not over think it!

I would defiantly have to say that the most precious item in my life is my family. I guess they really are not “items” but they really are people I could not live without. First of all, I have a twin sister that I am very close to. I could not imagine not having her around. If I was an only child or did not have a twin I probably would not be the person I am today. We practically do everything together. Even though sometimes I get annoyed with her, that is only because I see her every moment of my life! Because we spend so much time together, we practically can read each others minds. It is really funny because sometimes we just start cracking up over nothing.

Another person I would not live without is my mom. She is one of my best friends. Whenever I have a problem she can always help me solve it. She has sacrificed so much for my family. When my sister and I were born she stopped working just so she could stay home and raise us. Just 4 years ago she decided she wanted to go back to work, and got a really great job she likes. She is really supportive of me in whatever I choose to do. When she went to school she was an A+ student, but she never pressures me to be like her. Even if I come home with a B on a paper instead of an A, she does not get mad or tell me I need to get A’s. Even though she would not be unhappy if I was a B or C student, she is lucky that both me and my sister are A students. I hear stories about kids that are afraid to tell their parents about a bad grade. I think when parents put so much pressure on their children it makes them scared to open up to them. My mom is not judgemental at all. Sometimes she teases me about some of the things I like, but I know she appreciates that I am my own person. Without my sister or my mom, I do not think I would be the same person I am today.

I think the best thing about where I live is the seasons. In some parts of the USA, people only experience 1 or 2 seasons. For example, in California they never really experience winter. Where I live, we fully get all four seasons. It is pretty fun because in the winter we get to play in the snow and in the summer we get to go swimming and have fun at the beach. Everything here is constantly changing. During the fall, the leaves start to change colors and the temperature starts to drop. During the winter, there is always snow on the ground and the temperature is extremely cold. On average, the temperature is around 30 degrees. After winter, my favorite season comes. During the spring, the flowers start to bloom and the temperature rises. I love spring because nature is full of life. I feel like I get to start over. After my favorite season comes most students favorite season. SUMMER! Schools are out and everyone gets to have fun swimming and going to the beach. The weather is warm and the sun sets very late at night. It is hard for me to believe that some people experience the warmer holidays all year. Some people have never felt the snow fall down onto their face. I guess when the temperature is 20 degrees and you feel like you are going to freeze you don’t get to fully appreciate the beautiful snow.

I think the most unique thing about my school is the use of blogs, podcasts and wikis. Not many other schools in my town, or even state, use these tools. They make school so much more interesting because in these days all kids practically live on their computers. I feel like we are the beginning or something big. I predict that in the next 5-10 years all schools will use these tools. They will need a school to model theirs after. Already many schools have used our work in their classes. I really think we are the faces of the future.

When you walk down the street almost everybody you see is text messaging, emailing or talking from their cell phones.Everywhere we go technology follows us. Why not incorporate it into our lives as students? I, from my experiences, know that as soon as I get home I head straight for my computer/ I check my emails, talk to my friends, check our my favorite blogs and do even more things. It is so convenient to be able to do all these things WHILE checking out my assignments for homework. When I have to do research for a report all of my resources are right at my fingertips.

Some people might say learning on the computer is being lazy, but I call it being productive. Kids these days have so many activities going on. From soccer practice, to dance rehearsals, to piano lessons, everyone is so busy. If we learned on the computer, everyone would have so much more flexibility. The effort students put into their work would increase and they would be excited about their assignments. I think it would be a disservice not to use the computer. I bet in the next five years everything will be done electronically. Why not prepare students for their futures? Isn’t that what school is about ?

As a student, I really do not feel I have much of a say on how our school works. I think if all teachers were extremely proficient with technology, they would not be as scared to bring technology into the classroom. The technology era did not officially start until maybe 2002. Most teachers had already been teaching for decades before this happened. They are not as computer savvy as many a 30 year old teacher would be. There are still many mysteries about technology, like safety issues. I think once technology becomes an even more important part of everybody’s life, some of the mysteries would disappear. I bet as children and teens from the technology generation grow up, they will incorporate more and more technology into our daily lives, like in schools.

If you asked many Americans what they thought when they heard the words “America”, there would be a few common answers. Some people would say it represented freedom, and a growing country. Some people would say taxes, bills and debt. Of course, most Americans know the history of our country. So, I was wondering what people in other countries think about America. To them, America might seen very powerful and rich. Other people may dislike America. So, I contacted Aaron from Thailand to ask him what he thought. I am still awaiting his response, but I am looking forward to getting it. Once I find out what Aaron thinks, I will add it to this post. Stay tuned to read Aaron’s answer.

It seems like just yesterday started 6th grade. I remember all the 8th graders seemed so big and scary. Now that I am an 8th grader I wonder if the 6th graders think we are all big and scary! I have a lot of memories from 6th grade. I remember I used to concentrate on fooling around with my friends and talking more than studying. One day all of a sudden I just realized I needed to focus. All of you who know me now could never imagine me goofing around in class. Now that it is finally time to leave I am kind of sad. I have had so many memories here and have made so many good friends. I feel so comfortable in middle school, I do not know how I am going to react to the leap into high school. I am taking all honors and AP classes, so I am a little nervous about all the work. Everybody is telling me how hard it is going to be and that I am going to fail. When I finally get to high school I am not going to let what people say intimidate me. I bet when I finally go up to the high school I will do fine, and will have been worried over nothing. Being with older kids also scares me. I have heard from people that the seniors and juniors mostly leave the freshmen alone. I hope they are right! I just remember how scared I was in 6th grade around older kids, I just hope it is not the same in high school.

There are some things that I am really looking forward to in high school. Since 7th grade I have been playing volleyball. When I first started I was really bad. I could not serve or bump the ball for anything, but then I went to a clinic at Choate Rosemary Hall and it really helped me improve. All through the summer I practiced outside, and got really good. I am looking forward to trying out for the volleyball team in high school. I used to play for the park and rec team over the fall, and the head volleyball coach at the high school was my coach. I hope she remembers me and saves me a spot on the team! I am also looking forward to spending more time with my friends. This year on my team I practically have no of my really close friends, so I really do not talk to many people throughout the day. I hope that in high school some of my friends are in the same classes as I am, and we will get to spend more time together. I really am looking forward to having more independence. In middle school we always have to walk in lines or go places with a large group, and in high school you’re on your own schedule. After 9 years of being treated like a child, we are all finally going to start being treated like young adults. These years at middle school have gone by so fast. I hope high school goes by just as fast!

As many of you already know, Monday is Martin Luther King day. Not only was Martin Luther King an activist against racism, he was a man who just wanted to live his life in peace. He was born on January 15th 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. Martin Luther King did not just fight against segregation towards African Americans, he helped cure white people of racism. It only more people in the world were like Martin Luther King, the world would be a much more compassionate place. We could feel like they can relate to all different kinds of people. Race would not matter. Even though the world has changed a lot since Martin Luther King’s death, we are still not free of racism. Everyday people make judgements about people just because of their skin color, and this was the exact thing Martin Luther King was fighting against. There are so many stereotypes that exist in the world. People make judgements by a person skin color, size, social status and many other things. Next time you make a judgement about a person think “I wonder what they are thinking about me?” In honor of the man that tried to make a better world, I think that we should all really consider taking charge and making this world a better place. Stand up for what you believe in. Next time you see someone getting picked on about their skin color, or any other reason, stand up to that bully. If they end of saying some cruel things to you, just remember you are sacrificing yourself for the well being of others. Just like Martin Luther King did. It is important to remember great people like Martin Luther King not only on a holiday, but all the time. Remember that he sacrificed his own life you the country. To truly realize what a great man he was, just think “Would I do what he did?” It takes a great person to accomplish all that Martin Luther King did. Even after his death his close friend Ralph Abernathy led a protest to support sanitation workers in Tennessee. Ralph Abernathy stayed at the same hotel that Martin Luther King did the day he was assassinated. These men and women would go to any length to make the world a fair and just place.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.
-Martin Luther King Jr.

I am writing my blog post on the second video on teacher tube which included all the different couples. I think it was pretty obvious what this video was about: Love. It was also about how love hits everybody and anybody. It showed how race, age or what you look like doesn’t matter when it comes to love. Love has nothing to do with any of thos physical qualities. Love can happen to ANYBODY! This is because all different kinds of people fall in love (young, old, black, white, and every color in between.) When it comes to love, age doesn’t matter either. The elderly, children, teenagers, and middle aged people can all fall in love. Love can be equally strong regardless of what your age is. You can be madly in love when you are five or 105 years old. Lastly, It doesn’t really matter who you are with or what they look like. All that matters is that you love them and they love you.

They guide us and teach us lessons about life and how to be good people. Well, the person in my life that influences me is my grandmother. Recently, she has been having some problems with my uncles and cousins, and it really upsets. She has a stomach disease called diverticulitis, and it causes her to get very bad pains in her stomach and makes her throw up. When she gets really upset about the problems in her life, her diverticulitis acts up and she gets sick for weeks at a time. Even though she has these burdens, she always tries to stay strong and remember that she still has a loving family and people who she can trust. Whenever I feel overwhelmed with school or just life in general, I can just call her up on the phone and she always makes me feel better. She is really funny and can always make light out of a dark situation. She cares about me and my family so much and I really admire her for being such a strong and loving person.

I know some people who are so caught up in being popular and having “the right” friends. Does it really matter who your friends with as long as you like them?It is not always a popularity contest. As long as your a nice person and enjoy life, nothing material matters. I think that people should seize every opportunity they are given instead of sitting back and letting it pass by. You should take charge of your life, and if you want something you should try your absolute hardest to get it. Climb Mt. Everest. Skydive or bungee jump. Say hi to random people on the street. Just have fun and do whatever makes you happy, not the people surrounding you.
