November 1st
On November 1st 1815 Crawford Longwas born. Before today I did not even know he existed, but without him many people would have died. Crawford Long was a doctor from Georgia who attended the University of Pennsylvania to get his M.D. He was the first doctor to administer anesthesia induced with ether. Ether is extremely flammable, so it is not used anymore. He used it the first time on March 30,1842 on a patient with a tumor in his neck. He also used this anesthetic to do amputations, and during childbirth. Without Crawford Long we would not have been able to make critical medical advances. In Georgia, Crawford Long has a hospital named after him, and a museum.
