The Dead Sea

Posted on October 17, 2007.

Ahhh finally a chance to use my favorite website of all times, wikipedia. I absolutely love wikipedia. Just like WedMD( if you have read my previous posts you will know what I am talking about) I can go on wikipedia and search through the articles for hours. They just catch my attention, and I get addicted.  I guess it is a weird hobby, but at least I am filling up my brain with useful information! Anyway, this week our assignment was to blog about something we had no previous knowledge on. I had no idea what to write about. I mean how are you supposed to search for something you don’t even know exists. But, just like every week I was excited and looking forward to the challenge.  Anyway I really do not know how i came across my topic. It just hit me like a ton of bricks. I would research the Dead Sea. First of all, how can a sea be dead? This was one of the many questions I wanted to learn about. Secondly, why is this sea different from all the others? I just thought it was a normal sea, until i started wikipedia-ing.

Ok so I did not exactly understand why this sea was considered “dead”. I found out that it is considered dead because it has a really high salt content. Fish and plants can’t survive in the high levels of salt. The Dead Sea is located between Israel and Jordan. It is the worlds 2nd body of water. A strange fact is that the waters temperature is warmer in the winter, rather than the summer. Because there is so much salt in the water, you can just lay on your back and the water will keep you afloat. My dad has a skin condition called psoriasis. If he wanted to get treatment he could go to the Dead Sea. The sea is below sea level, so some of the sun’s harmful rays do not reach you. It is helpful to people with psoriosis because the sun’s rays can help clear up your skin. If you went in a tanning booth you may get skin cancer, but those harmful rays do not reach the Dead Sea. I never knew what the Dead Sea was , and i especially never knew the benefits it could have towards people.

Wow that is really strange that it is warmer in winter rather than summer. I think that it is also strange that you can float. What exactly about the salt makes you float. What makes it so salty? is it like the earths crust? How can it be below sea level if it is a sea?? That makes no sense at all! =] this post is really well written and the beginning is very catchy which is spelled C- A - T- C- H- Y-. Lol

I thought that was pretty interesting and I definitley learned something new.One thing I can understand is why you like Wikipedia. I think that it is a simple search engine and I like it too.
